FAQ
Why is it called Neurotypical Translator?
The primary goal is to help neurodivergent people understand neurotypical language — which often involves implied meanings, unspoken social rules, and indirect phrasing that can be genuinely confusing. It also works in reverse, helping neurodivergent people phrase things in ways neurotypical people are more likely to receive well.
Is this tool free?
Yes, completely free and no account is required. You can start translating immediately. The tool runs on API costs, so if it's been useful, a small donation is appreciated but never required.
What does "neurotypical language" actually mean?
Neurotypical communication often relies on indirect phrasing, implied expectations, and social niceties that don't mean exactly what they say. "We should catch up sometime" rarely means "let's make a specific plan." "Let me know if you need anything" is often a social gesture rather than a genuine offer. "That's interesting" can mean the opposite. This tool decodes what's actually being communicated.
Who is this tool for?
It's useful for anyone who finds neurotypical communication confusing or exhausting — including autistic people, people with ADHD, and anyone who tends toward direct, literal communication. It's also useful for neurotypical people who want to communicate more clearly with neurodivergent friends, family members, or coworkers.
How is this different from just using ChatGPT?
This tool is purpose-built for neurodivergent communication. It has a bidirectional translation mode, customizable tone settings (neutral, formal, casual, empathetic), and an optional context mode that explains the social subtext before translating. You don't need to write a long prompt — paste your text, pick your settings, and go.
Can I use it for work emails or messages?
Yes — that's one of the most common use cases. Paste a message from a manager or colleague to decode what they actually mean, or paste something you've written to soften the tone before you send it. Many people use it for Slack messages, emails, and text messages.
Is my text private?
Text you enter is sent to OpenAI's API to generate the translation and is not stored on our servers. We use Plausible Analytics, which is privacy-focused and does not use cookies or collect personal data.
Does it work for ADHD, not just autism?
Yes. While the tool is often discussed in autistic spaces, the communication challenges it addresses — indirect language, implied expectations, subtext-heavy messages — affect many neurodivergent people including those with ADHD, dyslexia, and other conditions. The ND → NT direction is especially useful for people who communicate very directly and want to soften their phrasing.
